Let’s begin this blog post by first stating here at WMA we do not see Twitter as a popularity contest purely to see who can get the most followers.  It’s a perfectly legitimate networking tool that when utilised correctly can perform an integral and valuable part of your daily business routine.

However, there is nothing wrong with a bit of vanity every now and again so upon discovering Twitter Holic we had no choice but to see who was popular and where we stood in the grand scheme of things.

The official top 100 sees Ashton Kutcher come in at no.1 with 3,655,618 followers – now I liked the Butterfly Effect but it was surprising to see him ahead of folk such as Barack Obama, Britney Spears and MC Hammer.  Obviously you’re not going to get to hang around in this gang but when you enter your username you get to find out your overall TwitterHolic ranking and your regional ranking.

The Web Marketing Advisor account, still relatively in its infancy, finds itself 875,363rd overall and 725th in Manchester.  CEO Guy Levine fairs somewhat better finding himself 49,718th and in the top 100 for Manchester – the stats profile show 36th whereas the actual Manchester page shows him at 58th – we have Manchester Confidential and Manchester Airport in our sights though it maybe some time till we are in amongst the likes of Coleen Rooney, Neil Rimmer and Richard Madeley –and just to reiterate,  we hope to get there via a following based on quality and informative tweets and will not be following anyone and everyone in the hope they follow us back.

Except maybe for Katy Perry.
