Greater Manchester Police

Yesterday the Greater Manchester Police gave a brilliant example of how to use Twitter to make a point. Like many public services at the moment, the police are facing large cuts in public funding. As a way reminding us all (and politicians in particular) of the great work that they do and the daily challenges they face, they decided to Tweet every single incident that they had to attend over a 24 hour period. The result was a seemingly endless and fascinating stream of tweets. In total there were 3,205 tweets which included such gems as:

Call 384 report of man holding baby over bridge – police immediately attended and it was man carrying dog that doesn’t like bridges

It was surely one of the best examples yet of how to use social media for public relations and judging by the reaction to it on Twitter the people this campaign was really aimed at, the people who have control of the police budget, must surely have been made to sit up and take notice. Here is a collection of some of the more quirky tweets:

Call 313 report of a confused man at a hospital in Manchester #gmp24
